No audio and sound on Blackboard

If you’re experiencing no audio or sound issues on Blackboard, especially during live sessions (like Collaborate Ultra) or when playing videos, here’s how to troubleshoot the problem step by step:

🎧 1. Check Your Device’s Audio

  • Ensure your volume is up and not muted.
  • Test sound by playing audio from another app (e.g., YouTube or Spotify).
  • If using external speakers or headphones, verify they’re plugged in and working.

πŸ”ˆ 2. Check Browser Permissions

Blackboard (especially Blackboard Collaborate Ultra) needs access to your microphone and speakers.

  • In Chrome or Edge:
    1. Click the lock icon in the address bar.
    2. Make sure β€œSound” is allowed.
    3. Also check that microphone and camera access is allowed.

πŸ§ͺ 3. Run the Collaborate Audio/Video Setup

  • If you’re in Blackboard Collaborate, go to:
    • Settings > Audio and Video Settings > Set up your camera and microphone
  • Make sure the correct input/output devices are selected.

πŸ”„ 4. Switch Devices or Restart

  • Try switching to a different browser (Chrome or Firefox recommended).
  • Restart your computer.
  • Disconnect and reconnect Bluetooth headphones or audio devices.

🧩 5. Check for Conflicting Applications

  • Close any other programs that use sound (Zoom, Skype, Discord) as they may interfere.

πŸ“± 6. Mobile Device Issues

  • If using the Blackboard app, make sure it has microphone/speaker permissions.
  • Try reinstalling the app or using a web browser instead.

🧰 7. Contact Tech Support

If none of the above works:

  • Exit and rejoin the session (if it’s live).
  • Contact your school’s IT Help Desk or Blackboard support.
  • You can also visit Blackboard Collaborate support for more help.
