The Language and Writing Advancement Program (LWAP)

UFH TEACHING AND LEARNING CENTRE

Language and Writing Advancement Programme (LWAP)

is a key academic support initiative offered through the institution’s Teaching and Learning Centre (TLC). Aimed at enhancing students’ academic literacy, LWAP provides assistance with assignments, proposals, and research reports, thereby helping students navigate the demands of academic discourse.

LWAP employs a peer collaborative approach, where trained facilitators work closely with students to develop their writing skills. This method not only aids in managing large student numbers but also creates a comfortable learning environment that encourages active participation.

Objectives and Principles

Our aim is to create an effective and supportive learning environment—one that fosters quality learning, promotes successful throughput and student retention, and is informed by collaborative partnerships between key institutional role players. We strive to ensure that students are aware of and can access available learning resources and academic support, while also developing the skills needed to become independent, lifelong learners. Additionally, we are committed to providing appropriate advice, information, and guidance to support their academic success.

How LWAP Differs from other programmes

The approach is not remedial or focused on marking, but rather on meaningful academic responding. It is not ad-hoc, but an intentional part of the Teaching and Learning Centre’s integrated strategy alongside E-learning. This process is collaborative, reflexive, and reiterative, and includes the systematic gathering of data to track student profiles and inform ongoing teaching development.

Language and Writing Advancement Programme Facilitators (LWAP)

Language and Writing Advancement Programme (LWAP) Facilitators play a vital role in supporting students as they navigate the academic demands of higher education. Their work centres on strengthening students’ ability to communicate clearly, think critically, and engage confidently with academic material across all disciplines. Through specialised guidance, LWAP Facilitators help students develop the foundational language and writing skills necessary for academic success.

At the heart of their role is the enhancement of academic writing. Facilitators assist students in structuring essays, crafting logical arguments, and refining their writing style to meet academic standards. They also introduce students to essential practices such as proper referencing, paraphrasing, and the avoidance of plagiarism. By offering personalised feedback, they empower students to improve their drafts and deepen their understanding of academic conventions.

Beyond writing, LWAP Facilitators support students in developing stronger language proficiency. This includes improving grammar, vocabulary, reading comprehension, and the ability to interpret complex academic texts. They guide students through the processes of summarising, synthesising, and analysing information, helping them become more critical and confident learners.

In addition to language and writing support, facilitators also contribute to students’ overall academic development. They teach effective study strategies, assist with note-taking and exam preparation, and help students build communication skills for presentations and class discussions. Through one-on-one consultations and group workshops, they create a supportive learning environment where students can ask questions, practise new skills, and grow academically.

Ultimately, LWAP Facilitators serve as academic partners who help students bridge gaps, overcome challenges, and realise their academic potential. Their guidance not only enhances students’ performance in individual subjects but also equips them with the long-term skills needed for success throughout their academic journey.
