UFH TEACHING AND LEARNING CENTRE

ELEP - REZ Buddy

The Extended Learning Environment Programme – ELEP (REZ Buddy) at University of Fort Hare is a student-led initiative designed to foster community, mentorship and support among students residing in university residences. This programme aims to ease the transition for first-year and new students by pairing them with experienced peers who can provide guidance, share insights and offer assistance in high risk modules and overall student success.

Through regular interactions, workshops, and social events, the REZ Buddy Programme encourages a sense of belonging and camaraderie within the residence halls. It serves as a platform for students to build meaningful relationships, develop leadership skills, and contribute to a supportive living and learning environment.

This cyclical model promotes continuous growth, engagement and the cultivation of a vibrant campus culture.

Extended Learning Environment Programme - ELEP (REZ Buddy) Facilitators

Extended Learning Environment Programme (ELEP) – often known as the Rez Buddy programme – Facilitators play a crucial role in supporting students’ overall academic and personal transition into university life. Their work extends beyond the classroom, focusing on creating a supportive, engaging, and development-oriented environment within student residences. Through mentorship, academic guidance, and community-building activities, Rez Buddy Facilitators help students adapt, achieve, and thrive throughout their studies.

At the core of their responsibilities is student orientation and adjustment. Rez Buddy Facilitators help first-year and returning students navigate the challenges of university life by offering information, guidance, and practical strategies for managing academic and personal pressures. They create safe spaces where students can ask questions, seek advice, and build confidence as they settle into their new learning environment.

Academically, ELEP Facilitators provide essential support that complements students’ formal coursework. They assist students with understanding module expectations, developing effective study habits, and managing their workload. Through study sessions, academic check-ins, and one-on-one conversations, they help students stay on track, identify learning difficulties early, and access the correct university resources for additional support.

Beyond academics, Rez Buddy Facilitators foster a sense of belonging and community within the residence. They organise activities, discussions, and peer-support initiatives that encourage positive interaction and promote holistic well-being. By building strong peer networks, they help students develop interpersonal skills, emotional resilience, and a sense of connectedness—factors that significantly contribute to overall academic success.

Their role also includes promoting responsible student behaviour and encouraging healthy lifestyle choices. They guide students on time management, personal organisation, and balancing social and academic commitments. Through mentorship, they help students make informed decisions that support their long-term goals.

Ultimately, ELEP – Rez Buddy Facilitators serve as mentors, role models, and companions on the university journey. Their support equips students with the confidence, skills, and community needed to navigate university life successfully. By bridging the gap between residential living and academic engagement, they play a transformative role in shaping students’ holistic growth and long-term success.
