Supplemental Instruction (SI) Programme

UFH TEACHING AND LEARNING CENTRE

Supplemental Instruction

The SI (Supplemental Instruction) programme at the University of Fort Hare (UFH) is an academic support initiative designed to help students succeed in high risk modules. It provides peer-led study sessions and one on one consultations that complement regular lectures, focusing on high-risk modules where students typically face difficulties. The programme aims to improve understanding of course content, enhance study skills and foster a collaborative learning environment.

While specific details about the SI programme at UFH are not readily available in the provided sources, such programmes generally involve trained student leaders who facilitate group study sessions, encourage active learning, and provide additional resources to support academic success.

Supplemental Instruction Programme Facilitators

The Supplemental Instruction (SI) Programme Facilitators at the University of Fort Hare are more than just peer tutors, they are trained student leaders who guide their peers through challenging courses, helping to demystify difficult concepts while cultivating a collaborative and supportive academic community. Reporting to the Teaching & Learning Centre, these facilitators undergo rigorous preparation to develop not only subject-matter expertise, but also facilitation, communication, and leadership skills. In 2025, the SI facilitators at UFH continue to embody the university’s commitment to student success: by running regular, voluntary out-of-class sessions, they create safe, structured spaces where students can ask questions, debate ideas, and build academic confidence. Through their work, these leaders contribute significantly to higher retention, greater course mastery, and stronger academic literacies — all while gaining valuable experience in mentorship and peer education themselves.
